The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America
Erik Larson

Our assessment: Another rare unanimous two thumbs up. This book dragged a bit in places for some, but ultimately all appreciated the story combined with the history lesson. The discussion was more lively than what might be expected from an "historical" novel.

Proposed books: The Devil in the White City, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, ??

The Time Traveler's Wife
Audrey Niffenegger

Our assessment: Once in a while, we read a book that's a hit with everyone. The Time Traveler's Wife earned that distinction. We found this book moving and creative. The beginning is a little tough-going; it takes a few chapters to get used to the sequence of the narrative. Once you're accustomed to the format, it's hard to put this book down. The ending haunts you for weeks.

The Blond Box
Toby Olson

Our assessment: Two thumbs WAY down! The unanimous opinion was that The Blond Box was impossible to follow and completely uninteresting. From what we could tell, this book was about an unresolved murder case, a sex show, a futuristic science fiction novel, and some hippy commune in the desert. Also, everyone in the book had a prostate problem. Some of us optimistically pressed past page 100, hoping the book would take a turn for the better. Only Jessica stuck it out to finish the book... and she regretted it. Way to take one for the team, Jessica!
